Dr. Harka Gurung Fellowship 2009

 New ERA (P) Ltd. seeks to assist promising young Nepalese students from Universities in Nepal by providing them partial fellowship for field research related to their thesis for Masters Degree. The priority areas for research fellowship are:

  • Social Inclusion

  • Social Movements

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Regional and Local Economic Development

  • Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration

  • Gender Equity

  • Poverty

  • Internally Displaced People

  • Good Governance

  • Social Forestry

  • Natural Resources

  • Maternal/Child/Reproductive Health

  • Security Sector Reform

 

 

Conditions for Fellowship 2009

 Eligibility:

Applicants, who have completed their course work for Masters Degree and are planning research related to their Masters Degree, are eligible to apply. In order to be eligible for the fellowship, the applicant should also have successfully completed the first year exam. The proposal should be “close to final”; New ERA would like an opportunity to provide inputs to the selected candidates in finalizing the research proposal. However, this does not suggest that the candidate submits an incomplete proposal.  

The fellowship is intended to support the student in conducting field data collection, analysis leading to high quality of research and reporting. New ERA reserves the right to award or reject the proposals received. 

Amount of Fellowship: 

The support for Masters research will range from Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 30,000/- depending upon the quality of research proposal and relevance of the topic of research. In addition New ERA will provide other technical support such as, assistance in research design/methodology, framing data collection instruments, data analysis and review of report. 

 

Documents required for Dr. Harka Gurung Fellowship: 

The candidate has to make sure that all the below mentioned documents are submitted along with the filled out application form. Failure to submit any of the mentioned documents will render the application invalid.  

 

i)                Filled out fellowship application form (along with a passport size recent photograph),

ii)               Full text of research proposal in the format specified,

iii)              An official letter of recommendation from the applicant's supervisor/ guide,

iv)              Photocopy of Marksheets

v)                Applicant's C.V,

vi)               Documents to other partial support, if any. 

 

Research Proposal Format :

The research proposal including its title page should not be more than 15 pages (12 points, Times New Roman, single line spacing). The content of the proposal should have clear cut research problem, study goals with specific objectives or research questions, literature review and scientific research methods. The research method should include description of the study site, sample size, tools for data collection, methods of analysis. The relevance of the study should be clearly explained. The proposal should include a time frame and a reasonable estimated cost for the field survey.

 

 Other Conditions:

 The fellowship recipients must submit progress report(s) of their study to New ERA. Upon drafting of the thesis, before finalizing the thesis, the fellowship recipients must share their findings at a workshop/seminar organized by New ERA. The recipients must also submit a final copy of their thesis, hard copy as well as electronic copy to New ERA. The recipient will have to complete the study within twenty-four months from the time of the release of the first installment. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the fellowship amount.

 

Evaluation Process:

In order to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process an Evaluation Committee will be constituted by the Fellowship Management Committee of New ERA. The evaluation committee shall review the proposals and make a final evaluation of the applications and award the fellowships. Preference will be given to female students and those from ethnic minority groups, disadvantaged groups and remote areas. Preference will also be given to researches that will be carried out in Mid Western and Far Western regions of Nepal. Dalits, non advantaged Janajatis and females are especially encouraged to apply. 

 

Announcement of Award Recipient :

The research fellowship applicant will be informed (by telephone, email) about the status of his/her application within one month of the last date of submission of applications. The application for the research fellowship should reach New ERA by September 15, 2009, by 4:30 pm and should be clearly labelled. Applicants sending the application through mail should make sure that their application reaches New ERA by the specified deadline. Applications arriving after the specified deadline will not be considered. Announcement of the recipients will be made available in about a month’s time.

Basis of Payment:

Payment shall be made in 3 instalments and will be related to progress made and pre-determined benchmarks.
