A Review on CARE Nepal’s Activities on Urban Poverty Reduction in Nepal

Abstract: A national level study on urban poverty in Nepal is lacking. However, there are several case studies on the poor, health situation of women and children at Kathmandu valley. The studies show that the urban poverty is more complex than rural poverty. The level of unemployment correlates negatively with the level of affluence. Therefore, employment generation for the poor is a must in the urban sector. In this context CARE Nepal initiated ‘Urban Development Project 2006-2008’. This study was to review the activities and experiences on urban poverty and social justice. The study had also recommended for extensive urban sector survey specifically on slum/squatter settlements, street children, poor women in commercial sex market, and porters/unskilled transportation workers.
