Title : Rapid Qualitative Assessment of AIDSCAP Effects on Behavior Change among Commercial Sex Workers and their Clients

Abstract : The main objectives of this study were: to assess target groups' awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS, awareness of AIDSCAP communication messages and self-risk perception; and collect information on target groups' most recent use of condoms. The study was carried out among the commercial sex workers (CSWs) and their clients to determine the status of AIDSCAP intervention impact on the target groups. The study emphasised qualitative information rather than statistical analysis (except the frequency of the response). A sample of 25 CSWs and 25 clients was picked up for the survey. Identifying (and to a great extent interviewing) CSWs was not easy at all. However, hotel or tea-shops, local bar (Bhatti Pasal), Rickshaw puller, local pimps, local residents and most important of all, CSWs and their clients themselves were the key informants. The "mystery client" approach was another way of identifying CSWs. With regard to the identification of clients, an "intercept survey approach" was followed. The study area or geographic locations of the study was the AIDSCAP intervention area, i.e., transportation routes from Naubise to Janakpur and Birgunj.
