Title: A Pilot Niger Seed
Demonstration Project in Kavrepalanchowk and Makawanpur Districts.
Abstract: Niger is one of the oilseed crops successfully cultivated on
poor/marginal lands in mid-hill and Terai. The main objectives of the project
were to increase awareness about cultivation of Niger seed, motivate farmers
towards Niger cultivation, create opportunity for additional cash income
generation and contribute towards sustainable export of Niger seeds. A
bottom-up planning approach with people's participation was adopted from the
very beginning of the project. A Niger producer's group has been set up to
encourage rural farmers to take up Niger cultivation. The group is a link
point between seed collectors and traders/exporters. The link facilitated a
steady flow of information about national/international market. A Niger
cultivation manual containing useful information on Niger planting
irrigation, plant protection and marketing has been published.
