Drug retail shops have been registered 7570 by July 1998 with the Department of Drug Administration (DDA) in many parts of the country. Community survey conducted in Nepal contains that providing drugs for customers seeking medicines without doctor's prescription by drug retailers is common.

This study was done to provide input for development of training strategy for drug retailers and therefore focuses on understanding the underlying motivation, which governs their behaviour. The study determined the extent to while drug retailers recommend medicines and ascertained appropriateness of the drug recommended by retailers.
